What's needed to make compression work?

It looks like the compression switch in the plugin options doesn't affect its behavior. What's needed to make compression work?

Then it should work :)
Only change is that cache files are gzipped

But it doesn't. When I switched and cleared the cache and visit the home page, I got this:

Yes, I see but 200 KiB vs. 180 KiB isn't "87.29% is compressed". :D

Complain to gzip or what is that method. It just remove all white spaces most probably, do not think it's doing actually archive or something like that.
