Seriously needs a flash message to show when a comment is posted on your item and flash message to show when private message has been received!!

Thanks for your idea, however it will not be implemented, because flash message whould be shown until all personal messages are read, that is simply spam and harrashment.

Using other funcitons you can show user there is new unread message, for more info check plugin config.

Can you not do it like a mybb forum e.g mark all forums as read?? just a good idea
