When I go to edit an item and promote it, i check box for premium and click promote,
goes to next page and where item description should be I get 'Not recognized ()'
and cannot do anything.

Im having the same error, when I publish an ad and click on make premium I have the same screenshot in http://lakompra.us

Can you test with bender theme?
Problem here is about editting but promote should not be available on edit page.

I already test with bender theme and is the same error message, them promotion section in user settings is working.
