What's the best way to avoid / stop spam bot registrations?
« on: October 01, 2021, 03:19:35 PM »
I get approx. 10+ new registrations a day by spam bots and my website is not even officially launched yet. Would love to hear any suggestions on how to deter or stop all these spam registrations?

Check this plugin:
https://osclasspoint.com/osclass-plugins/protection-and-spam/anti-spam-and-bot-protection-osclass-plugin-i51

It verifies email & IP against external service if it is spam bot or no.
To get fast support, we need following details: Detail description, URL to reproduce problem, Screenshots

Please update the description of the plugin, I was unsure if it would help me against spam REGISTRATION because it only focusses on comments, listings and messages. But to confirm this also helps against spam registration?

Hi,

I still experience problems with the plugin, to often it bans people that aren't bots and want to use the website.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Do you recommend otherwisely using Akismet?

I am already using a Recaptcha from Google when registering.

Yes this issue was addressed before on this forum.

We also have to deal daily with legitimate users that are banned because they have somehow fallen into the "stopforumspam" database.

But okay, I can understand that users are flagged in that database because they may have visited our site via corrupt wifi or something similar, bigger problem is when users are banned multiple times (you delete the ban rule, next time he visits your site the user is blocked again).
We really need a whitelist function, because it is a pain in the ass to explain to some users why we are blocking them again and again for no reason..

Regards

We are planning update & refactor of stopforumspam functionality and support "credibility" setting.
Because some users are in database with rating 20 (out of 100, so there is 20% chance person is spammer), but others are with value 99.
So i.e. setting this to 70% would differentiate between "proven spammers" and "possible spammer".

Give Cloudflare a go, it stops most of my spam signups and you can use Cloudflare for free for this service :-)
